The Fear of Being Wrong

by James on January 8, 2010

Everyone has fears.  Look around, you see no shortage.  The fear of losing your house, not paying your mortgage, losing your job, or the fear of people finding out you’re in distress.

These are defensive fears.  But how about the fear of taking initiative?  Starting a business, executed on an idea or a dream that you’ve had on your mind for years.   An idea that you will take to your grave unless you step out and swing.

As I write this blog I’m overcoming a fear.  The fear of being wrong, and even more so the fear of being ignored.  Like everyone I have something to say.  The major difference between people who are successful and their mediocre counterparts is what they do with their fears.

In this post, I announce it to the world (currently a small one, 17 subscribers, yay!) that I’m starting a blog that means something to me.  I’m passionate about investing in real estate and I have something to say.  I’ve studied enough where I can add value to the process and I’m okay of being proved wrong.  In some cases I will prove ignorant, but hopefully prove humble enough learn from it.

You grow through iteration.  Jack Welch talks about the iterative process which essentially means, do something and keep doing it until you get it right.  Whether you’re a first time home buyer or looking to invest, there’s only one way to do it. Do it.

Dear James, Thank you for starting this blog (9 months ago). This article spoke to me on many levels. I loved your point “The major difference between people who are successful and their mediocre counterparts is what they do with their fears.” Lately, I’ve been thinking about the concept of boldness. In congruence to your post, “Sometimes we just need a little boldness to get to the next level in life.” Thank you for blogging. Your voice is powerful.
